Trouble seems to be brewing in Umunneochi LGA All Progressive Congress (APC) over the conduct of chairmanship primaries with accusations of imposition of candidate and other illegal activities.

On Wednesday 18 November 2020, members of Umunneochi APC held a peaceful protest at the APC secretariat in Umuahia, Abia State over the just concluded local government primary elections.

Leading the delegation of protesters was Mr. Onu Charles Ugochukwu, an aspirant in the local government chairmanship elections who described the election process as disenfranchisement and an imposition of a candidate against the people’s wish.

The protest which was held at the state secretariat was aimed at showing displeasure in the choice the party’s candidate and the process.

While addressing newsmen he said “ The people are saying that the candidate chosen is not a reflection of their choice and as such heavily criticize and fault the selection process”

The group however appeared officially to see the party chairman at the state secretariat to submit it’s petition and also stated that ignoring their demands would mean the party does not respect them and they will be forced to pull out of the whole election and threatened to support the opposition in the coming local government elections.

Another person who addressed newsmen from the group Hon. Anya Mathew Onyekachi a councillorship aspirant stressed that that the protest was timely, coming at a time the party is trying to solidify its grip at the grassroots and some few selfish person are trying to sabotage the general efforts of the party loyalists.

Their demands was that the party conduct a reelection which will be free and fair, and they are ready to accept the outcome of such election results.

Efforts to reach the party chairman was not successful as he was unavailable as at the time of filing this report.
