The Abia State Taskforce, under Governor Alex Otti’s directive, has marked illegal structures at Ngwa Road by Ube for removal. Traders have been given notice to vacate as the state government intensifies efforts to restore Aba’s urban planning and sanitation.

In a bid to sustain the ongoing urban renewal efforts across Abia State, Governor Dr. Alex Otti has mandated a holistic approach to sanitizing every nook and cranny of the state, with particular emphasis on Aba, the commercial nerve center. The governor’s directive aims at restoring order and ensuring that infrastructural development is not hindered by indiscriminate erection of illegal structures.
Following this mandate, the Abia State Taskforce on Urban Development has been instructed to immediately commence the demolition of illegal structures obstructing drainage systems and sanitary lines in Aba. The taskforce, led by Vice Chairman Mr. Emma Rich, has marked several makeshift shops and container structures along Ngwa Road by Ube for removal.
According to reports, the affected structures, occupied by traders dealing in kerosene, plastic products, hairdressing, rice, and food spices, have been obstructing the free flow of water and worsening flooding in the area. The governor’s directive emphasizes that clearing these structures is crucial to enhancing environmental sanitation and preventing perennial flooding, which has posed a major challenge to residents and businesses in Aba.
The taskforce has already issued demolition notices to traders occupying these illegal structures, instructing them to vacate within days to allow for the swift implementation of the government’s urban renewal policy. This move aligns with Governor Otti’s vision to make Aba a model commercial city with functional drainage systems and properly planned road networks.
Residents of Ngwa Road have lauded the taskforce for taking decisive steps to reclaim public spaces and ensure the smooth implementation of the state’s infrastructural development agenda. Many expressed relief that the government is prioritizing the removal of structures that contribute to environmental degradation and road congestion.
A resident, Mr. Chinedu Okorie, commended the government’s efforts, stating, “This is long overdue. These illegal shops block water flow and make the area prone to flooding. Governor Otti is truly determined to transform Aba, and we fully support this move.”
It will be recalled that Governor Alex Otti had earlier issued a stern warning against unauthorized structures and encroachments across major roads and drainages in the state. His administration has consistently emphasized the need for proper urban planning to drive economic growth and ensure a cleaner, safer environment for residents and investors.
As the deadline for demolition looms, the taskforce has vowed to ensure full compliance, warning defaulters that no illegal structure will be spared in the government’s quest to enforce order. The removal exercise is expected to commence in earnest in the coming days, as the government intensifies efforts to restore Aba’s lost glory as the business hub of the South-East.
