ABHA INTERVENES, AS TRICYCLE OPERATORS UMUAHIA ZONE PROTESTS IMPOSITION OF MULTIPLE LEVIES (PICTURE/VIDEO)

The Amalgamated Tricycles Operators Association Umuahia Zone on Monday July 1st 2019, embarked on a peaceful protest to the Abia House of Assembly to lay their complaint over what they termed as multiple levies and victimization of its members by Umuahia North LGA officials, TIMAAS and thugs.
While laying his complaint before members of Abia State House of Assembly who came out in their numbers to listen to the Keke operators, the leader of the group Mr. Okechukwu Ijebuonwu explained that they were at the Assembly with a broken heart to plead with the Lawmakers to come to their rescue as they have been subjected to all form of payments, brutalization and victimization.
Mr. Ijebuonwu further stated that what the government approved of them to be paying initially was the sum of #150, but was surprise to notice that the members upon the payment of the approved levy, were forced to make other unapproved payments by the Umuahia North L.G.A, stressing that this ugly incident has not gone down well with its members as they have since become object of victimization by the authorities.
He called on the Speaker Abia House of Assembly and the Members to urgently intervene in what he described as broad day robbery and extortion which the members could not carter for as some of their Tricycles are on higher purchase.
Responding on behalf of the members, the Speaker Abia House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji condemned the act and warned that the House will no longer tolerate such act anymore, stressing that the members cannot sit back and watch the people being intimidated for no just cause.
The Speaker however told members of the Tricycle operators to stop paying money to individuals, and advised them to always pay into designated government IGR accounts.
He reminded them that the House had passed a law that all government money must go directly to government accounts, maintaining that the era of making government payments to individuals are over.
The Speaker went further to intervene in the matter by inviting Umuahia North LGA Chairmen for an emergence meeting tomorrow with other parties involved. The meeting is scheduled to hold from 8am to 9am Tuesday, July 2nd 2019.
