The Chairman House of Assembly Committee on Education in the Abia House of Assembly, Hon. Thomas Nkoro has declared that Abia State University, Uturu, (ABSU) has not received her monthly subvention from the state government for some time now.
Hon. Nkoro who made the declaration during the Presentation of a Report of the House Committee on Education regarding the indiscriminate increase in Fees/levies by the University.
Presenting the Report on the floor of the House yesterday (Tuesday 8th 2019), during plenary, Chairman of Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Hon. Thomas Nkoro said that the wage bill of ABSU is N260 Million, while the monthly Subvention from the State Government stood at N100 Million, pointing out that the Institution has not received the Subvention for some months now.
In its recommendation, the Committee resolved that the Management of ABSU should review downwards the fees paid by Students
That the State Government should ensure that Funds appropriated to the Institution are released as and when due
After hearing from the Committee and its recommendations, Leader of the House Hon. Solomon Akpulonu moved a motion for the adoption of the Report as a Working Document of the House, while the Minority Leader Hon. Abraham Oba seconded it.
The Committees Report was subsequently committed to the House of Assembly Committee of the whole for further Legislative action.
