ABIA: Umuasua Community Sets New Democratic Standard with Digital Voting Innovation, Elects New Leadership

An Abia community (Umuasua) has made history with a real-time online leadership election. Click the link below to read the full story and details.

A community in Abia State has made history by conducting what has been described as the first complete real-time online leadership election by a community association in Nigeria.

The people of Umuasua in Isuikwuato advanced community leadership electioneering by successfully conducting a real-time online election to select the new leadership of the Umuasua Progressive Association (UPA), allowing members across the world to participate in the voting process.

The election, which lasted for about one week and concluded on April 4, 2026, allowed Umuasua citizens both in Nigeria and in the diaspora to vote in real time for leaders who will pilot the affairs of the association for the next four years.

Speaking on the innovation, the Chairman of the Neutral Electoral Committee, Chief Isaiah Ndubuisi Ojiulor, explained that previous elections were conducted physically in the village, which prevented many committed members living outside the community from participating in the voting process.

According to him, many financially committed members of the community who live abroad or in other parts of Nigeria often missed the opportunity to vote because they could not travel home during elections, a situation the committee considered a form of disenfranchisement.

He explained that the committee decided to introduce an online real-time voting system to ensure that every committed member of the community, regardless of location, would have the opportunity to vote and participate in choosing their leaders.

He further revealed that the platform used for the election was designed to be secure and rig-proof, noting that some individuals attempted to vote more than once but were automatically blocked by the system.

The committee chairman called on other communities in Nigeria and even government institutions to begin to consider adopting online real-time voting systems to enable Nigerians across the world to participate in elections and community decision-making processes.

The election produced a new leadership team that will run the affairs of the association for the next four years. Those elected include Mazi Ozoememna Igbokwe as President General, Chijioke Igbokwe as Vice President, Comrade Emenike Iroegbu as Secretary, Obinwanne Jason Ahia as Assistant Secretary, Elechi George as Treasurer, Hon. Kingsley Okorie as Public Relations Officer, Chidozie Onwuka as Financial Secretary, and Onyebuchi Lawrence as Provost.

Members of the Neutral Electoral Committee included Chief Isaiah Ndubuisi Ojiulor, Engr. Chibuike Ahia, Surveyor Iheuwadinachi Ucheibe, Okechukwu Frank Iroanya, and Daniel Ogwo.

Members of the community expressed excitement and appreciation to the Electoral Committee for the innovation, noting that the online election gave every member a sense of belonging and participation, regardless of where they live.

Observers say the development could mark a major step forward in community governance and democratic participation, especially in communities with large diaspora populations.
