Tragedy struck in Kaduna State as bandits attacked a wedding ceremony in Kahir village, Kagarko Local Government Area, killing no fewer than 13 people and abducting several others in a late-night assault that has once again raised serious concerns over insecurity in rural communities.
The attack reportedly occurred around 11:47 p.m. on Sunday when heavily armed gunmen stormed the wedding venue and opened fire on guests, throwing the entire community into chaos and confusion as people ran for safety.
Residents said the attackers arrived in large numbers and operated for nearly an hour without resistance, shooting sporadically and targeting people at the event. Many victims sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the General Hospital in Kagarko for treatment, while those with severe injuries were later referred to hospitals in Kaduna for advanced medical care.
A community leader who spoke after the incident revealed that the attackers did not only kill and abduct residents but also looted shops in the area, carting away food items, provisions, and medical supplies before leaving the village.
The victims of the attack have since been buried amid grief and anger in the community, while families of those abducted are said to be waiting for possible contact from the kidnappers.
A police source in Kagarko confirmed the attack and stated that security agencies are currently working to determine the exact number of persons abducted during the incident.
The spokesperson of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Hassan Mansur, also confirmed the incident and assured that a detailed report would be released after preliminary investigations are completed.
The latest attack has further intensified concerns about the security situation in rural areas of Kaduna State, where bandit attacks, kidnappings, and killings have continued despite ongoing security operations.
Residents are now calling on government and security agencies to increase security presence in rural communities to prevent further attacks.
