The Abia State Government has outlined more projects set to be executed in Umuahia as part of ongoing urban renewal and infrastructure development across the state capital.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists at Government House Umuahia on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held on Monday, March 23, 2026.

According to the Commissioner, the state government has already approved the release of funds to accelerate the completion of ongoing projects within the state capital, particularly projects aimed at beautifying Umuahia.

He explained that the urban beautification programme includes roadside tree planting, landscaping of public spaces, painting and repair of road kerbs, and installation of road signs across major roads in the city.

Some of the roads listed for the beautification programme include Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard, Library Avenue, and the road stretch from Shoprite through Aba Park. Protective gauge wires have also been installed along some of the roads to protect newly planted trees.

He noted that the projects are part of the government’s broader plan to transform Umuahia into a more organized and modern state capital.

The government also announced plans to install speed bumps on some roads within Umuahia to reduce road accidents caused by overspeeding.

According to the Commissioner, with the construction and reconstruction of roads in Umuahia, some motorists have begun to overspeed, thereby putting the lives of commuters and residents at risk.

He said the installation of speed bumps is a safety measure aimed at reducing accidents and protecting road users.

On infrastructure development, the government disclosed that several road projects are ongoing and new ones have been approved across Umuahia.

Some of the road projects include:

  1. Umuokoro Road linking BCA Road to Ikot Ekpene Road in Ohokobe Ndume
  2. New Heaven Junction to Isi-Court Road in Umuahia South
  3. Uzzi Ossah Road
  4. Rehabilitation of Mgbarakuma–Nsirimo Road
  5. Road linking the International Conference Centre to Winners Church/ASEPA Road

The government also revealed that the Umuahia Capital Development Authority will soon commence the rehabilitation of internal roads within the Methodist Theological Institute, Umuahia.

In addition, the government announced progress at the Afara Relief Market project site where perimeter fencing has been completed and compensation has been fully paid to landowners.

The Michael Okpara statue will also be retrofitted as part of the city upgrade projects.
