Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti, has thrown his weight behind the controversial removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the decision as bold, necessary, and ultimately beneficial to Nigerians.
Speaking on Thursday, March 19, 2026, while receiving the Federal Commissioner representing Abia State at the Federal Character Commission, Victor Ikeji, at Government House, Umuahia, Governor Otti said the policy aligns with long-held views he has consistently expressed.

Governor Otti noted that he had, over the years, publicly criticized the fuel subsidy regime, describing it as unsustainable and riddled with inefficiencies.
“Some of us have always maintained that petroleum subsidy was a scam. The President showed courage by taking that decision,” Otti said.
He acknowledged that while the policy may have brought short-term hardship to Nigerians, it remains a necessary corrective step.
“It may be painful now, but when you correct a long-standing wrong, there must be some discomfort. In the long run, things will stabilize and correct themselves,” he added.
The Governor also used the occasion to commend President Tinubu for appointing High Chief Victor Ikeji as the Federal Commissioner representing Abia State at the Federal Character Commission.
He described the appointment as a thoughtful recognition of Abia State, assuring the President that the appointee would justify the confidence reposed in him.
“I want to thank Mr. President for this appointment. It is one of the best decisions, and Abia people truly appreciate it,” Otti stated.
Governor Otti described Ikeji as a capable and competent individual, stressing that he is well-suited for the responsibilities of the office.
“We know that he is a square peg in a square hole. We have no doubt that he will perform excellently,” the Governor said.
He urged Ikeji to bring innovation, dedication, and integrity to the role, while assuring him of the state government’s support and collaboration.
Otti emphasized that the Federal Character Commission plays a critical role in ensuring fairness, equity, and balanced representation across Nigeria, expressing confidence that Ikeji would uphold these values.
“I can assure you that he will not be found wanting in promoting fairness, equity, and justice, which are the core principles of the Commission,” he added.
In his remarks, Victor Ikeji expressed gratitude to both President Tinubu and Governor Otti for the opportunity to serve.
He pledged to discharge his duties diligently and ensure that Abia State benefits fully from federal opportunities.
According to him, he has already begun engaging with staff of the Commission in Abia and is working towards strengthening its presence in the state.
“I am committed to ensuring that Abia State is not left behind in federal appointments and opportunities, in line with the principles of equity and justice,” Ikeji said.
Ikeji further revealed plans to reposition the Commission’s operations in Abia State, focusing on improved monitoring of federal appointments and enhancing institutional effectiveness.
He also commended Governor Otti’s leadership, describing it as reform-driven and impactful.
The meeting, which had top government officials in attendance including Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba, highlights ongoing collaboration between state and federal representatives aimed at advancing Abia’s interests.
Governor Otti’s endorsement of key federal policies and appointments underscores a growing alignment on governance priorities and national development strategies.
