Why Abia’s SSG, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, Is Embarking on a Leave of Absence — Governor Otti Gives Full Explanation

Abia SSG, Professor Kenneth Kalu, has been granted a leave of absence by Governor Alex Otti. Find out why he is stepping aside and what this means for the Otti administration. Read full details on our website…

The Secretary to the Abia State Government (SSG), Professor Kenneth Kalu, has officially proceeded on a leave of absence, following approval by the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, to enable him attend to what was described as serious domestic obligations requiring his physical presence in Canada.

Governor Otti made the disclosure during the State Executive Council Meeting held on Monday, December 8, 2025, noting that the requirements of the SSG’s office are too demanding to be handled remotely.

The Governor explained that although he initially explored the possibility of remote work, “the enormity of the tasks associated with the SSG’s office made it impractical,” hence his decision to grant Professor Kalu’s request. He expressed deep appreciation for Kalu’s “excellent and selfless service,” adding that his work ethic and commitment contributed significantly to the administration’s achievements.

In his remarks to the Council, Professor Kenneth Kalu expressed sincere gratitude to Governor Otti for the trust and opportunity to serve, stressing that being part of an administration that has restored hope, pride, and dignity to Abians was one of the greatest honors of his life.

According to him, “Growing up, I had a vision of living a simple and private life with modest ambition, but looking at what I have accomplished, I can only thank God for His grace. Above all, having the opportunity to serve in a government that wiped the tears of Abia people was a dream come true.”

Kenneth Kalu assured that although distance would keep him away temporarily, his commitment to Abia State remains unwavering, promising to continue contributing to its development “from afar.”

Before joining the Otti administration, Prof. Kalu was a senior academic in Canada, where he had previously taken a leave of absence to participate in the Governor’s campaign — a decision that later saw him appointed as SSG following the Labour Party’s victory at the polls.

An accomplished Chartered Accountant from Abam in Arochukwu Local Government Area, Prof. Kalu leaves behind a strong record of administrative excellence and integrity.

The announcement was made public through a statement signed by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, on December 9, 2025.
