Ohafia, Abia State — The Director General of the Abia State Orientation Agency (ABSOA), Lady Ure Abazie, has delivered a hard-hitting message to the people of Ohafia Local Government Area, stressing that the community’s future will only be secured when citizens embrace discipline, civic duty, and integrity.
Her remarks came during a special seminar tagged “Changing the Narrative at the Local Government Areas for Good Governance,” jointly organized by the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Abia State Orientation Agency (ABSOA).
The seminar, which brought together all Local Government Area Mayors and their executives, traditional rulers, presidents-general, women leaders, youth leaders, and members of the clergy, was aimed at strengthening local governance and building a culture of responsibility and accountability across Abia State.
Addressing participants, Lady Abazie declared that while government can provide infrastructure and opportunities, it cannot instill discipline in its citizens. She argued that the key to lasting development lies in a shift of mindset and responsible citizenship.
“Government can build roads, schools, and hospitals. But government cannot teach us discipline—it must come from within. Government can provide opportunities, but only a people with the right mindset can turn those opportunities into lasting wealth and development,” Abazie stated firmly.
The ABSOA boss lamented that for too long, communities have been held back by indiscipline, shortcuts, and the dangerous belief that government alone must solve all problems. According to her, real transformation comes when individuals take responsibility in their businesses, schools, markets, and homes.
She challenged the people of Ohafia LGA to rekindle their legendary history of strength and courage by living up to values of hard work, honesty, and excellence.
“If Ohafia must rise today, it begins with work ethics. We must learn to value diligence over quick gains, integrity over easy compromises, and excellence over mediocrity. A community that works hard and works right will always rise above limitations,” she emphasized.
Also speaking during the seminar, the Executive Chairman of Ohafia Local Government Area, Chief Eleanya Kalu, outlined the efforts of his administration to reposition the council. He announced that the council is already developing an official website to ease communication and enable residents to access services such as the Local Government of Origin Certificate and other essential documents online.
Chief Kalu further revealed plans to establish four night markets across Ohafia LGA, acquire a 55KVA solar power system for the council headquarters to guarantee steady electricity for workers, and convene a major security summit to strengthen local peace and order. He also highlighted ongoing agricultural investment initiatives aimed at boosting food production and job creation.
Abazie also stressed the importance of civic responsibility — obeying laws, respecting public property, and keeping the environment clean — noting that development cannot thrive where citizens neglect their roles in society.
Her message has since sparked conversations across Abia State, with some residents praising her forthrightness.
Nonetheless, her call to Ohafia LGA was clear: the power to shape the future lies in the hands of its people, not outsiders.
“The power to change our story is not in someone else’s hand. It is in ours. Let us choose to write a story of diligence, order, and pride in responsible citizenship. That is the Ohafia the world deserves to see,” Abazie concluded.
