In a compelling and inspiring address delivered at the public lecture commemorating the second anniversary of his administration, Governor Alex C. Otti, OFR, has once again captured the hearts of Ndi Abia, reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to transformation driven by knowledge and deliberate action.
Speaking at the JAAC Building Auditorium in Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, Governor Otti emphasized that the revolutionary changes witnessed in Abia State within the last two years were not accidental but the product of deep intellectual reflection and bold execution of ideas.
According to him, “Every great thing begins with an idea. Electricity, technology, and even societal transformation stem from the simple question: What if?” The Governor explained that the foundation of the “New Abia” is rooted in asking critical questions and acting courageously on the answers.
The lecture, themed “Transformation as the First Fruit of Knowledge,” featured distinguished economist and former Minister of Finance, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, as guest lecturer. Governor Otti commended Dr. Kalu for his honest and thought-provoking presentation, describing him as “a man who tells it as it is,” adding that the New Abia project is being built on truth, transparency, and inclusive governance.
The Governor further revealed that the event was not just ceremonial but a moment for self-evaluation, aimed at assessing achievements, learning from mistakes, and identifying new areas for improvement. He noted that governance is a dynamic process, and leaders must be open to feedback from the people.
Otti highlighted key achievements of his administration, including the full payment of salaries and pensions, massive road rehabilitation across the state, improved urban sanitation, and the restoration of dignity to public service. He proudly noted that citizens are now actively participating in governance by sharing feedback and holding leadership accountable.
Citing the recently completed Port Harcourt Road in Aba, the Governor narrated how local residents, traders, and artisans organized a spontaneous carnival to celebrate the government’s fulfillment of its promise — without any government funding. “It was the people’s event,” he said with pride, underscoring the deep connection between government action and grassroots appreciation.
Governor Otti also shared remarkable testimonials from ordinary citizens and even a former minister who praised the visible transformation of Umuahia from one of Nigeria’s dirtiest cities to one of its cleanest urban destinations.
In a rare turn of events, the Governor disclosed that business leaders are now voluntarily seeking ways to contribute more through taxes and other channels. “They recognize that what we do with infrastructure, security, and cleanliness directly impacts their business growth,” he added.
Looking ahead, Governor Otti expressed his commitment to institutionalizing reforms through legislation, having signed 18 new bills into law aimed at strengthening governance, unlocking economic potential, and enhancing administrative efficiency.
He reassured Abians that his government would continue to pursue ideas that empower people, attract global investment, and secure lasting prosperity for future generations. “We are only just beginning,” he declared, “and we will never stop asking the most important question: What if?”
In his closing remarks, Otti thanked all participants for their presence and promised more intellectually stimulating engagements going forward. “Together, we shall make Abia the hub of transformational ideas,” he concluded.
The second anniversary event was a strong affirmation that the New Abia is not a mere slogan, but a living reality shaped by visionary leadership, community ownership, and a bold reimagination of governance.
