Police arrest man after car collides with crowd at Liverpool’s Premier League trophy parade

A man has been arrested and 27 people have been taken to hospital with injuries after a car drove into pedestrians during Liverpool’s Premier League title parade. A statement from Merseyside Police read: “We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.”

Merseyside Police have confirmed that a British man has been arrested after a car drove into pedestrians during Liverpool’s Premier League title parade on Monday.
A police spokesperson said in a statement: “We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.
“We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.
“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.”
Premier League champions Liverpool also issued a statement which read: “We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.
“We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”
A press briefing held by Merseyside Police late on Monday evening confirmed that 27 people had been taken to hospital by ambulance.
Of those, two sustained serious injuries, one being a child. A total of 20 further patients were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The chief fire officer of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Nick Searle, stated that fire engines arrived at the scene within four minutes of the call, and released four people trapped under the vehicle.
Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson added: “It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city and the finale to a fabulous bank holiday weekend.
“Liverpool is a city that has a proud history of coming together and supporting each other during challenging times. I’ve no doubt that will again be the case over the coming days and weeks.”
