Business Owners, Keke Operators Decry Alleged Police Extortion at Checkpoints in Abia, Say It’s Killing Their Livelihoods

…We pay N2,000 to pass with goods — Business Owner
…It’s N100 every time for us — Keke Rider

Business owners and commercial tricycle (keke) operators in Umuahia, Abia State, have raised alarm over alleged persistent extortion and harassment by police officers stationed at various checkpoints along Isi Court–Aba Road.

They claim that officers manning stop-and-search points routinely demand bribes ranging from N100 to N2,000 before allowing them to pass, especially when carrying passengers or goods threatening to delay, detain, or confiscate goods otherwise.

Speaking to our correspondent on Friday 16th May 2025, multiple victims described the daily routine as “a legalized shakedown” that has negatively impacted their businesses. Observations at two key locations — Umudike Junction and Isi Court — revealed police presence actively stopping and searching road users.

One business owner, who requested anonymity, shared his ordeal:

“Any time I transport fuel for business in a 50-litre gallon using a motorcycle, I’m stopped. A police officer accused me of dealing in adulterated fuel and demanded N2, 000 before letting me go. Even after explaining the fuel was for church service, they insisted on payment.”

He described the officer as being in uniform, tall, heavily built, and dark-complexioned.

“It’s the same story every time. I always end up paying N2,000 just to be allowed through.”

Similarly, a keke operator lamented:

“I pay N100 at every checkpoint on Aba Road. It’s like a toll gate — there’s no escape.”

These road users are now calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Abia State Commissioner of Police to intervene and put an end to what they describe as institutionalized extortion.

Recall that in December 2024, the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, issued a directive banning arbitrary arrests, harassment of citizens, and unauthorized phone searches by police officers. The statement emphasized the need to uphold human rights and warned that any officer found engaging in such activities would face strict disciplinary action. However, based on recent events in Abia State, the directive appears to be largely ignored.

Many of the victims argue that extortion and harassment have become normalized among some officers during stop-and-search operations.

“The checkpoint has become a money-making spot for officers. This is not policing — it’s organized extortion,” another business owner said.

Observers warn that unless road users begin to lawfully challenge these actions, such abuse of power will persist, tarnishing the reputation of the Nigerian Police Force and undermining public trust.

“We urge the authorities to act. The checkpoints should be about public safety, not exploitation,” one victim added.
