Former Senator Elisha Abbo has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of ruling like an emperor and recklessly endangering Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s life by withdrawing her security.
Abbo made these shocking revelations during an interview on Prime Time, an Arise TV program, where he criticized Akpabio’s heavy-handed approach to governance in the upper legislative chamber.
Recall that Akpabio had orchestrated the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) on March 6 for what he termed “gross misconduct” following a seating arrangement dispute in the Senate. As part of her suspension, her salaries and allowances—along with those of her aides—were frozen, and her security detail was withdrawn.
“Akpabio sat like an emperor and ordered her suspension for six months. He withdrew her security, stopped her salary, banned her from stepping near the National Assembly, and even instructed the Inspector General of Police not to provide her with security,” Abbo said.
He further alleged that Akpabio’s actions deliberately left Akpoti-Uduaghan vulnerable to harm.
“In another way, he exposed her to be killed. When you strip someone of security in such a reckless manner, you are practically setting them up for an attack. The Inspector General of Police must have realized this and reconsidered.”
Abbo compared Akpabio’s high-handedness to his own past encounter with former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who handled a similar disagreement in the 8th Senate with political maturity rather than punitive measures.
On the recent plot to recall Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, Abbo dismissed it as “a fraudulent scheme marred by forged signatures” and accused Akpabio’s allies of orchestrating it to silence opposition voices in the Senate.
