The death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda has raised suspicions. NIDCOM demands a full investigation, insisting there should be no cover-up. Was it really an accident? Find out more.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has raised concerns over the suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer who reportedly fell from the third-floor balcony of a shopping mall in Uganda.

The 29-year-old striker, who played for Vipers SC, a top-tier Ugandan football club, was confirmed dead on Monday, sparking public outrage and calls for an immediate and transparent investigation.

According to Uganda Police Force, Lawal arrived at the shopping mall in his vehicle, with registration number UBQ 695G. He was reportedly meeting his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national who had been staying in room 416 of the building since February 20, 2024.

Naima allegedly left Lawal in the room, preparing tea, while she went to a game centre inside the mall. Shockingly, moments later, the Nigerian footballer was found dead after reportedly falling from the third floor.

The circumstances of Lawal’s death have triggered concerns, with many questioning whether his fall was accidental, or if foul play was involved.

Reacting to the incident, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of NIDCOM, insisted that there must be no cover-up, emphasizing that Nigerian authorities will not rest until a transparent investigation is conducted.

“His death is suspicious. We are demanding a full-scale investigation from the Ugandan authorities. There should be no cover-up whatsoever,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

Ugandan authorities have confirmed that they have retrieved CCTV footage from the shopping mall and have commenced interrogations to unravel the true circumstances surrounding Lawal’s tragic fall.

Lawal, a talented striker, began his career in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL), playing for notable clubs such as Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC, and FC Nasarawa.

He moved to East Africa in 2022, first joining AS Kigali in Rwanda before securing a transfer to Vipers SC in Uganda, where he played until his untimely death.

As the investigation unfolds, the Nigerian football community, his family, and friends are demanding answers. Many believe a thorough autopsy and forensic analysis will be crucial in determining the actual cause of death.

NIDCOM has assured the public that it is actively working with the Nigerian embassy in Uganda to monitor developments and push for justice.

With growing suspicions surrounding his tragic fall, the world now watches as Ugandan authorities determine: Was Abubakar Lawal’s death truly an accident, or is there more to the story?
