How Afenifere Leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo Passed On at 96 – Full Details Revealed

Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at 96. The respected elder statesman, known for his unwavering advocacy for true federalism and democracy, died peacefully at his Lagos residence. His passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics. Read full details.

The Yoruba socio-political landscape has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, at the age of 96. The elder statesman and fierce advocate for equity, justice, and good governance breathed his last on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.

In an official statement released by the family, the passing of the highly respected political icon was confirmed. The statement, signed by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo, read:

“He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos Nigeria home at the age of 96. We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was total, and this he fought for until he breathed his last breath.”

Pa Adebanjo’s passing marks the end of an era for Yoruba nationalism and pro-democracy advocacy in Nigeria. He was a firm believer in restructuring, true federalism, and the welfare of the Yoruba people within the larger Nigerian framework.

Pa Ayo Adebanjo was a distinguished lawyer, a veteran politician, and a former Organizing Secretary of the Action Group (AG) in the 1950s. As a close associate of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he played a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s early political landscape.

His involvement in Afenifere—a socio-cultural and political group advocating for the interests of the Yoruba people—cemented his legacy as one of the most vocal leaders in Nigeria’s democratic struggle. Over the years, he remained a staunch critic of successive administrations, demanding accountability and fairness in governance.

The late Afenifere leader is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Tributes have continued to pour in from political leaders, traditional rulers, and socio-political groups across the country, hailing his unwavering commitment to democratic principles.

Pa Adebanjo’s passing is being widely regarded as a great loss to Nigeria. Many see his death as the departure of one of the last standing disciples of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His advocacy for regional autonomy, constitutional reforms, and national unity resonated across different political divides.

As the nation mourns, preparations for his final rites are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
