After decades of neglect, the long-awaited reconstruction of the historic Omenuko Bridge in Ozu Abam, Arochukwu LGA, is now underway! Governor Alex Otti has flagged off the project, marking a new chapter in Abia’s infrastructure development.

The long-awaited reconstruction of Omenuko Bridge in Ozu Abam, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, officially commenced on February 4, 2025. The flag-off ceremony, graced by dignitaries from various sectors, marked a historic milestone for the people of Abam and the entire Abia State.

As a critical transportation link between Abia North and Abia Central Senatorial Zones, the bridge’s rehabilitation represents a significant step toward enhanced connectivity and economic revitalization.

A Journey of Concern and Hope

In May 2025, I traveled through the Omenuko Bridge for the first time. As the maiden Mayor of Umunneochi Local Government Area, I had traversed many roads, but this one stood out—not for its beauty, but for its peril.

The bridge, without guardrails, loomed dangerously ahead, evoking memories of the Astoria-Megler Bridge in Oregon for someone who might be afraid of heights. I was struck by its precarious state and the urgent need for intervention.

Recognizing its importance, I discussed safety measures with fellow Mayors before engaging the Mayor responsible for the bridge’s jurisdiction. My hope for immediate action was strengthened when I realized that Governor Alex Otti, OFR, would be passing through the bridge en route to an event in Ohafia. If anyone could bring swift and decisive action, it was him.

The Cultural and Historical Significance

The Omenuko Bridge bears a name steeped in history. In 1933, Pita Nwana, a carpenter and foreman at the Methodist College Uzuakoli, wrote *Omenuko*, the first-ever book in the Igbo language.

The novel, an award-winning story of power, betrayal, and redemption, instilled in me lifelong lessons on resilience and integrity during my early secondary school years. It is no coincidence that the bridge and the book share a name, as both symbolize endurance and transformation for the people of Ozu Abam and beyond.

The Need for Reconstruction

Originally built over 70 years ago, the Omenuko Bridge had suffered decades of neglect and structural decay, making it a major safety hazard. Despite numerous government promises, previous administrations failed to take action.

The narrow structure, frequent flooding, and poor road conditions led to multiple accidents and fatalities, making it one of the most dangerous routes in the region. With Governor Otti’s administration taking bold steps, the people of Abam and surrounding communities can now breathe a sigh of relief as the long-overdue reconstruction is finally underway.

Project Specifications

The new Omenuko Bridge will be a modern dual-carriageway structure designed for enhanced safety and efficiency. Its specifications include:

– Length: 45 meters

– Width: 8 meters

– Pedestrian sidewalks: 1.5 meters on both sides

– Approach roads: 100 meters on both ends for seamless connectivity

The project, awarded to Geld Construction, will be supervised by engineers from the Ministry of Works and is expected to be completed within nine months.

Economic and Social Impact

The Omenuko Bridge directly connects over 23 communities, making it a vital transportation corridor for thousands of residents. Its reconstruction will ease daily commuting, boost local businesses, and improve access to essential services such as healthcare and education.

Abam is known for large-scale farming and food production, serving as a major agricultural hub in Abia State. The dilapidated bridge had long hindered the transportation of farm produce, causing economic losses for farmers and traders.

With a well-constructed bridge, businesses will experience smoother movement of goods, strengthening Abam’s role as a key food supplier in the region.

A Symbol of Renewed Governance

The Omenuko Bridge project aligns with the Abia State Government’s broader vision of making Abia a model state with world-class infrastructure. Alongside this, another major road project in Abam—the ring road—is underway, further solidifying the administration’s commitment to modernization and development.

Community Reactions and Government Commitment

The flag-off ceremony was met with jubilation, as community leaders and residents expressed gratitude for the long-overdue intervention.

A traditional ruler in the area remarked, “For decades, we have lost many lives and livelihoods due to this bridge. Today, we witness history as our cries are answered.”

One elated resident added, “This bridge is everything to us. It connects us to markets, hospitals, and schools. This project will change our lives.”

Governor Otti reassured the people, stating, “This project is not just about infrastructure; it is about safety, economic progress, and keeping our promises to the people of Abia.”

A New Era for Abia

With construction in full swing, residents of Abam and surrounding areas can anticipate improved transportation, enhanced road safety, and economic revitalization. The reconstruction of the Omenuko Bridge is more than just an infrastructure project—it is a symbol of hope, progress, and responsible governance.

As Governor Otti builds corridors of prosperity across the state, the people of Abia can look forward to a future where long-neglected infrastructure is transformed into pathways for growth.

In the spirit of nominative determinism, the name Omenuko signifies one who acts in times of scarcity, while Chioma means a good God. Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, may not be God, but he is undoubtedly fulfilling a divine purpose—steering Abia towards its rightful place as a model state.
