ABIA AIRPORT PROJECT: Nsulu Community Supports Abia Airport Project After Engagement and Clarification

Abia State Government has successfully engaged the Nsulu community, resolving concerns over the proposed Abia airport project in Isialangwa North LGA. Despite initial protests, residents now express support, citing economic benefits and employment opportunities.

The Abia State Government has successfully engaged the Nsulu community in Isialangwa North LGA, resolving concerns that initially sparked protests over the siting of the proposed Abia Airport. The government’s comprehensive approach to community engagement has transformed skepticism into widespread support, with assurances of compensation and promises of economic development playing pivotal roles in the reconciliation process.

The meeting, held in Umuahia, brought together representatives from the eight host communities, traditional rulers, and government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Calab Ajagba, and the Abia Airport Project Coordinator, Pastor Okorougo Aji.

The project faced resistance from a section of the host communities who were concerned about potential land loss and the impact on their livelihoods. Protesters expressed fears that their ancestral lands and sources of income were being jeopardized without adequate consultation or compensation plans in place.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Pastor Ajagba emphasized that the protests were fueled by misinformation. He clarified that the government’s intention is not to displace residents but to foster development that benefits all. “There are people who may not fully understand the government’s intentions. This engagement is to ensure everyone is on the same page,” Ajagba stated.

He further revealed that initial consultations had been held with traditional rulers, but the government decided to extend these discussions to the broader community to ensure transparency and inclusivity. “The tree-cutting process has begun, and we will follow it with enumeration. Compensation will be provided to all affected members of the host communities,” he assured.

During the meeting, key community representatives, including Dr. Jessy Odu and Mr. Kingsley Ukaegbu, expressed their support for the Abia Airport project. They clarified that only one of the eight host communities had protested, attributing the unrest to a lack of accurate information.

Dr. Odu highlighted the economic potential of the Abia airport, stating, “The airport will open up our land for real economic activities. It will create employment opportunities for our youths and drive development across the region. This project is a game-changer for Nsulu and Abia State as a whole.”

Mr. Ukaegbu added that the airport project would not only boost local businesses but also attract investors to the region. “We see this project as a catalyst for development. Our communities stand to gain immensely from the increased economic activities it will bring,” he said.

The government highlighted the numerous benefits associated with the Abia Airport project, including improved infrastructure, job creation, and enhanced regional connectivity. The airport is expected to serve as a gateway for trade and tourism, significantly boosting Abia’s economy.

Pastor Ajagba noted that the Governor’s administration is committed to ensuring equitable development across the state. “Governor Alex Otti is determined to give every part of Abia a sense of belonging. This airport project is a testament to his vision of inclusive growth,” he stated.

The government plans to intensify its engagement with all host communities to address any lingering concerns and ensure that the project proceeds smoothly. Ajagba assured residents that their voices would be heard and their interests protected.

“We will continue visiting every community involved, ensuring that concerns are addressed and resolved amicably. No right-thinking Nsulu man or woman is opposing this project because it is clear that the benefits outweigh the concerns,” Ajagba concluded.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both the government and community representatives expressing optimism about the project’s potential to transform the region and improve the lives of its residents.

Key Benefits of the Abia Airport Project

Job Creation: Thousands of jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers.

Economic Boost: Increased business activities and investment opportunities.

Infrastructure Development: Improved roads, electricity, and communication networks.

Regional Connectivity: Enhanced trade and tourism potential across the South-East.
