N110.4 Billion Fraud Scandal: Court Issues Public Summons Against Yahaya Bello

After a prolonged legal battle, former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello has finally honored the EFCC’s invitation over financial allegations. Details of why he decided to honored to the long overdue invitation is stated below;

Former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has finally responded to a long-standing invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following a period of legal entanglements and public outcry. The EFCC had extended the invitation over allegations related to Bello’s tenure as governor, raising questions about financial mismanagement during his administration.

Despite numerous calls to appear before the anti-graft agency, Bello had previously delayed his appearance, citing ongoing legal proceedings that he claimed were necessary to protect his fundamental rights. A statement from his media office, signed by Director Ohiare Michael, clarified that the former governor had only sought to ensure due process was followed before submitting to the EFCC’s authority.

“Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who has always respected the rule of law and constituted authority, was simply exercising his right to seek legal clarity on the matter,” the statement read. “He has consistently sent his legal representatives to court hearings to address these issues.”

The former governor’s reluctance to honor the EFCC’s invitation had fueled speculation about potential attempts to evade justice. However, Bello now seeks to clear his name, assuring the public that he has “nothing to hide and nothing to fear” regarding the allegations. His appearance at the EFCC headquarters, alongside several high-profile Nigerians, marks a significant moment in his ongoing legal battles.

As a vocal supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its anti-corruption efforts, Bello emphasized his commitment to transparency and his belief in the rule of law. “It is on record that he was the first Governor of Kogi State to introduce anti-corruption measures to ensure the state’s resources were used for the benefit of its people,” the statement added.

While details of his engagement with the EFCC remain under wraps, his media team assured that further information would be disclosed in due course.

The public now awaits the outcome of this high-profile case, which could potentially set a precedent for how former public officeholders are held accountable for their actions.
