Ahead of the already intense 2023 General elections, Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has announced Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

The announcement was made at a meeting attended by PDP executives at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

This comes hours away from the June 17th deadline set for hopefuls to announce their running mates by the Independent National Electoral Commision, INEC.

According to PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, a 17-member committee had been set up by the party to pick a running mate and three names were submitted to Atiku to choose from.

Atiku, however jettisoned the party’s list and announced Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

The Vice President slot had been linked with big names including Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.

Speaking at the announcement event, Atiku said making a choice between the three names had been a difficult decision.

He also noted that some of the qualities he looked out for include someone who understands the enormity of the challenges facing the country and one who has demonstrated, from experience, that he can proffer some solutions.
