BREAKING: Senate Rejects Buhari’s Request On New Electoral Act 2022 | DETAILS

The Senate has rejected a request by President Muhammadu Buhari to amend section 84 subsection 12 of the amended Electoral Act 2022.

Buhari had criticized the section and said it “constitutes a disenfranchisement of serving political office holders” before he signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law on February 25.

Section 84(12) states that “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.

The bill had  on Tuesday, scaled the first reading despite a court order barring the Senate and the President from further amendment.

At the 2nd reading on Wednesday, March 9, the lawmakers rejected the bill through a voice vote

The request was rejected after Senator Yahaya Abdullahi made the lead debate for the second reading of the bill.

Before the Senate commenced consideration of the Bill on Wednesday, Senator Adamu Aliero had, while citing order 52(5) of the Senate Standing Rules, urged the Senate President to jettison proposed action on the Bill.
