The President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that it is dedicated to keeping agreements made to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to avoid disruptive strikes, provide continuous academic programs, and boost education funding.
President Muhammadu Buhari made the pledge while receiving members of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) at the State House, led by the Co-Chairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto, and Rev. Dr. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria.
According to the President, no civilization will ignore its educational system, including all of its components.
The President praised NIREC’s leadership for intervening in ASUU’s year-long strike and having meetings with the parties, saying that no society that desires to do well neglects its educational system.
Buhari encouraged NIREC to inform ASUU in their subsequent interactions, that the government values them and the service they bring to the country.
“However, they should be cognizant of the fiscal pressures that we are currently facing. Nevertheless, we remain committed to honoring our promises.
‘’For their part, I would like to encourage ASUU to continue to work with us towards finding resolutions to the challenges that confront us. My administration is committed to this engagement and dialogue, and I urge them to stay the course towards a joint resolution in the best interest of our children and nation” Buhari said.
