JUST IN: Senate Screens Lauretta Onochie, 5 Others As INEC Commissioners

The Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been directed to screen Lauretta Onochie and 5 others as INEC Commissioners.

The Senate President , Ahmad Lawan, gave the directive on Wednesday, June 9.

The screening for confirmation of Commissioners for the electoral body, is coming after 8 months President Muhammadu Buhari tendered a list of the nominees to the Senate for confirmation.

Following the nomination of Lauretta Onochie, who is also a media aide to President Buhari, to represent the Delta state board of the INEC, most Nigerians including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus in the senate kicked against her nomination.

It was argued that Onochie, who is currently a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress(APC) cannot be holding two offices at the same time.

Other names on the nomination list are; Professor Muhammad Kallah (Katsina), Professor Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti),  Saidu Ahmad (Jigawa),  Professor Sani Adam (North- Central), and Dr Baba Bila (North-East).

Meanwhile, the Committee led by Senator Kabiru Gaya, has four weeks to conclude the screening and report back to the red chamber at plenary.
