The Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU) Foundation embarked on their annual empowerment activity for the 2022 edition. The event was hosted by the C.E.O of the foundation Mr. Onyekwere Akym Uche at his home residence in Amaba-Isuikwuato, Abia State. Lots of attendees, beneficiaries and loyalist were present to witness and partake in the event. The foundation have a history of giving back to the society through their kind gesture by adhering to their motto, which signifies “Spreading Positivity to Humanity”. At this year’s event, Mr. Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU) a gubernatorial aspirant of Abia State with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was asked to share his views on zoning in politics. OAU responded to the political landscape in Abia state and Nigeria at large emphasizing on the significance of zoning.
He highlighted the importance of zoning making reference to urban planning. He gave an example of zoning classifications which includes residential, commercial, agricultural, industrial and/or hospitality among other particular designations. For a stable environment, the layouts must be separated to avoid disruptions and hazards. Residential layouts are carved out separately from industrial layouts so as to protect the inhabitants from toxic pollution and other health hazards. He believes with proper planning, there will not be any interruption from other class of urban planning. It will provide for safe and healthy environment. In the political landscape, the subject matter is distinctive. Zoning provides for equity and fairness, it provides for good conscience and prosperity. Also, zoning avails inclusiveness which can result to peace and unity within a community.
Abia State has its unique issue pertaining to zoning. OAU is of the assertion that the 2023 ticket should be zoned to Abia North. He explained for any political party or candidate to stand a chance to win the gubernatorial race, he/she must be of Abia north descent. He furthermore explained that the Abia central have had their chance and Abia south is ending their reign in 2023. It’s only fair and logical that the next governor must come from Abia north. Abia north consist of five local government areas namely Isuikwuato, Arochukwu, Ohafia, Bende and Umunneochi. OAU appealed to the good conscience of the people of Abia State and the political parties to stick to the zoning process as it will guarantee peace and unity in the state. The essence of zoning within the state provides for inclusiveness most especially prosperity. The solicitation and advocacy of an Abia north descent is in order which explains OAU’s candidacy for Abia State Governor in 2023. Coming from Isuikwuato makes Mr. Onyekwere Akym Uche eligible and a formidable individual to run for office.
As regards to the Nigeria political landscape, OAU gave his insight on the political spectrum on zoning. He explained that Nigeria is divided into six geo-political zone which comprises of South-East, South-South, South-West, North-East, North-Central and North-West. Of recent times, five of the geo-political zones have held power with the exception of the sixth zone that is the South-East. In an interview with the Governor of Kaduna State, Mr. Nasir El Rufai who commented on zoning which he expressly stated ‘that leadership of the country and of the state must rotate various part of the country/state. There is a law that is binding, the PDP have it in their constitution while APC don’t have it. However, they have an unspoken understanding which supports zoning. Failure to observe such understanding could lead to political chaos and instability. It is of his opinion that after eight years of Northerm leadership that the presidency must be open to the South”. OAU reiterated that, it is logical and in the name of equity and good conscience that the presidency be zoned to the South-East. We’ve had a President from the South-West and South-South. The South-East is eligible to contest for the office of President without an objection from the other zones. We talk about equity and fairness, equity regards as done what ought to be done. Equity is a sort of equality. To preserve the unity and existence of a true One Nigeria, it requires for the policy of rotation to supersede any other and it is time for South-East to produce the next president in 2023.
